Vacuum Brazing of Kovar Alloy and Alumina Ceramics
Normantherm•8/6/2026
Vacuum brazing of Kovar alloy and alumina ceramics is a highly specialized joining process used to manufacture hermetically sealed components for the semiconductor, aerospace, medical, defense, and vacuum electronics industries. Kovar alloy is selected for its coefficient of thermal expansion, which closely matches that of alumina ceramics, minimizing thermal stress and ensuring reliable ceramic-to-metal joints.
The vacuum brazing process is performed inside a high-vacuum furnace using a carefully selected active brazing alloy. The oxygen-free environment prevents oxidation and contamination while promoting excellent wetting between the Kovar alloy and alumina ceramic surfaces. This creates a clean, high-strength, and vacuum-tight metallurgical bond with exceptional dimensional accuracy and minimal distortion.
Compared with conventional joining methods, vacuum brazing produces flux-free, hermetically sealed joints with excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, and long-term reliability. The controlled heating cycle also reduces residual stress, making the assembly capable of withstanding repeated thermal cycling and harsh operating conditions.
Vacuum-brazed Kovar alloy and alumina ceramic assemblies are widely used in electronic packages, vacuum feedthroughs, high-voltage insulators, X-ray tubes, microwave devices, sensors, semiconductor equipment, and aerospace systems. Their excellent sealing performance, electrical insulation, and durability make them indispensable for high-reliability applications where precision and vacuum integrity are critical.
